Arboretum Explorer Days are full days of activity, comprising indoor classroom-based workshops, guided walks and an Act of Remembrance, and are available at the cost of £8 per student.

This Explorer Day invites young children to discover the special role animals have played in helping people throughout history. Through simple storytelling, arts and crafts and a gentle exploration of the outdoor spaces, children learn how animals have shown bravery, loyalty, and friendship in times of need.

For: Key Stage 2 & Key Stage 3
Through interactive activities and discussion, this session explores how people communicated during the war and the important roles individuals played, including tunnelers working beneath the front lines and Land Girls supporting the country at home.
The day also includes a guided tour exploring the memorials on site as well as an Act of Remembrance.

For: Key Stage 2
Across two classroom sessions, pupils explore contrasting experiences of what life was like on the home front. In “Life in the Cities,” they learn about rationing, bombing, and the challenges faced by those living in urban areas.
In “Life as an Evacuee,” pupils take part in a fun and thoughtful logic activity to understand what it might have been like to leave home and adapt to a new environment.

This Explorer Day focuses on the celebration and change that came with Churchill’s announcement on VE Day. Students will explore how individual lives were affected differently all over the world, while some were celebrating, some were still fighting. This day also looks at technological advancements brought about during the War, including developments in Radar technology.

For: Key Stage 2 & Key Stage 3
This activity explores the stories of people from different backgrounds, who all took risks and showed great courage and determination to save the lives of Jewish people during the Holocaust.
Students will identify reasons for the actions of heroes across Europe and why some people became rescuers during the Holocaust.

For: Key Stage 3 & Key Stage 4
With a focus on the transition from traditional to contemporary remembrance, students will explore modern day conflicts and what it means to remember since the beginning of the First World War. Through creative tasks, conversations and a guided tour, students will have a hands-on experience exploring how remembrance is acknowledged in many different ways.
