Kiln Fired Memory: Call for Artist Proposals

Kiln-Fired Memory is a large, multi-partner arts engagement project that is being proposed to take place from 2024 to 2026, exploring the important role of ceramics in remembrance throughout history. Culminating in a site-wide exhibition at the National Memorial Arboretum, the project will bring show-stopping loans from national museums to the Midlands region, with exhibitions featuring artworks produced by both commissioned artists and participant groups. Throughout the programme we will engage communities with the ideas that have shaped commemorative pottery throughout history, and the ways in which ceramics have been used to remember and celebrate people and events in cultures around the globe.

We are currently seeking an artist to carry out community co-creation workshops as part of the research and development phase of Kiln Fired Memory, which has been generously funded by Art Fund and the Garfield Weston Foundation.

The artist practitioner will work with the National Memorial Arboretum to engage local community groups in arts-based engagement workshops, focusing on the production of individual ceramic artworks. Through creative participation, the artist will encourage conversation and explore the participants’ experience of memory and memorialisation in order to inspire their creation of their artworks.

These artworks, the methods used to produce them and participant feedback will help to shape plans for the delivery phase of Kiln-Fired memory, with the potential for participants’ artworks to go on display as part of an exhibition in 2025/2026.

Through this project the artist will help the Arboretum to understand the ways in which communities prefer to engage in ceramic arts, and explore new perspectives connected to themes of ceramics and remembrance, both collective and individual.

Artists are invited to submit a project proposal outlining an approach to community engagement and artwork creation. The focus of this project is on ceramics and memory in a broad sense, and we welcome proposals that explore any aspect of remembering, reflection and commemoration, whether personal or collective.

Objectives

1. Engage with community groups to collect stories and understand people’s perspectives on memory and remembering

2. Inspire creative participation among the communities

3. Have a positive impact on the wellbeing of participants

4. Support skills learning and sustained engagement with arts and heritage

5. Gain insight into the ways in which co-creative arts practice can be used to benefit communities, and how we might use it to gather and tell new stories as part of Kiln Fired Memory in the future
