The Armed Forces Memorial, and its immediate surroundings, will be closed to visitors from 10am on Friday 8 August to 5pm on Sunday 17 August to allow us to prepare to host the national VJ Day 80 commemorations. The rest of the Arboretum's 150-acres will remain open to visitors as normal. We are sorry for any inconvenience this might cause and appreciate your understanding during this time.
Every day for two weeks we will welcome a different learning group to the Arboretum to take part in our free remembrance workshops, culminating in a beautiful display of individual unique lights of remembrance, suspended from the ceiling here at the Arboretum during Illuminated Arboretum, created in collaboration with the 500 school children who have joined us.
Your day will be split into two sessions, the first will bring Arbie and the Magical Lights to life, encouraging students to explore the deeper meanings of light—how it is used, what it represents, and why it holds different meanings for different people in the context of remembrance.
The second session will see students design and craft their own personal light of remembrance using recycled materials. Each light will be uniquely decorated to honour those who have served and sacrificed, symbolising the act of passing on the baton of remembrance to future generations.
