Take a seat in the Royal Artillery Garden's old gun carriages and enjoy the beautifully planted garden with idyllic water feature. See the Alder Tree planted on the island within the water, chosen because Alder charcoal was once used in the production of gunpowder.
Adjoining this is the National Miners’ Memorial, illustrated with a bronze frieze depicting coal miners. The frieze descends diagonally in the style of an early drift mine, while the panels recessed into the stone represent a seam of coal cut into the earth.
Keep following the path to the Far East Prisoner of War (FEPOW) Memorial Building, which features a permanent exhibition telling the story of those taken prisoner during the conflict in the Far East in the Second World War, their treatment and the thousands who died as a result.
Take a moment to explore the crests, badges or cyphers elegantly carved into the York Stone paving. The pin oaks ‘Quercus palustris’, provide a natural canopy above them and were selected for their beautiful red foliage during the autumn, the season of Remembrance.
