Visiting with children

Our grounds are family friendly and there’s a lot for younger visitors to enjoy.

*All children must be supervised by an accompanying parent/carer/guardian at all times. Our 150-acre site is home to an abundance of wildlife and children will enjoy exploring the many habitats and natural features of the site, including our maturing wildlife pond.

Our NEW Children's Sensory Play Garden featuring tunnels, climbing globe, bannister slides and time circle is located close to the Remembrance Centre. A second children's play area is located in the Children's Wood onsite.

Our NEW Landscapes of Life Exhibition includes interactive elements for younger visitors to enjoy including a 'magical' pathway of leaves which reveals poppies beneath as you walk though, and a hands-on exhibit for children to design their own memorial landscape with benches, trees, animals and symbols. Family tickets are available, please visit our daily activities page for further information.

We run children's activities during Staffordshire school holidays. Visit our events pages for further information.

Children’s meal boxes are sold on site and picnic areas are also available.  We offer baby change facilities.

Top Tip... Pond dipping equipment is available for hire on selected days throughout the year but we welcome visitors with their own equipment daily. Children should be supervised by a responsible adult at all times.

Saplings Sensory Play*
Our Little Saplings Sensory Play and story telling is designed to help our youngest visitors enjoy the Arboretum and heighten their development and enjoyment of learning. Sounds, colours, textures and other hands-on elements will add to the week’s chosen story.

Following story time, children and accompanying adults will be given complete free-reign of our expanding and evolving array of sensory toys with the objective of encouraging creativity and multi-sensory experiences. All this takes place in our beautiful surroundings and with full access to our excellent restaurant and on-site facilities.

Each session will run on the first Friday of the month.

Time: From 10.30am
Price: £1.50 per child/ sapling. For babies, toddlers and preschool children.

World War I Children's Backpacks*
Our children's backpacks are full of gadgets and tools to help children learn more about the Arboretum and life on the front line during World War I. Follow Tom's First World War story, use a periscope to peek over the parapet of our trench and navigate around the site to find WWI linked memorials with a compass. The backpack also includes a helmet, binoculars and a Princess Mary Christmas Tin. Visit our World War I above ground replica trench, now including an officers' dugout, to explore and learn about the living and working conditions endured by the soldiers who fought during WWI. Costumed interpreters will also be onsite during weekends and on Wednesdays during the summer holidays, and on selected dates during September, October and November.

Price: £2.50 per backpack + £5 refundable deposit.
