There are also some very special recordings to watch and listen out for:
On Sunday 6 November, BBC One’s Countryfile programme is re-running some of its best bits from the previous year. As part of the programme, they will show pretty much the entire item they broadcast last August featuring the family of Corporal Nicholas Webster-Smith, Royal Military Police. He was one of five British soldiers killed in an attack in Helmand Province, Afghanistan in November 2009 and, as well as having his name on the Armed Forces Memorial, he has a tree dedicated in the Afghan Willows.
On Wednesday 9 November, Jeremy Vine is hosting a BBC Radio 2 programme recorded at the National Memorial Arboretum called Songs My Son Loved. It features Carol Jones who lost her son Sergeant John Jones in Basra in 2005. Carol is a real friend of the Arboretum and was instrumental in the campaign to have the Basra Memorial Wall placed here.
On Armistice Day (and repeated on Remembrance Sunday), BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time will have a segment recorded at the National Memorial Arboretum. It will feature an interview with Paul Kennedy and volunteer Barbara Wain. She planted a tree at the Arboretum about 10 years ago in memory of her mother and father. Her father fought in the Second World War and was lost at sea in April 1941 when Japanese planes bombed his aircraft carrier, HMS Hermes.
On Remembrance Sunday it’s the big one, with the hour long BBC One Antiques Roadshow “Remembrance Special” being broadcast. It features some amazing stories and shows off our wonderful Arboretum in all its glory. The producers had so many good stories they have promised to load all of them online, including those that didn’t make the final cut.
