Where our Nation remembers
70TH ANNIVERSARY OF 1941 GREEK CAMPAIGN
Date: 30 August 2011
The Brotherhood of Veterans of the Greek Campaign will hold a commemorative service at the National Memorial Arboretum on 10 September, to mark the 70th anniversary of the 1941 Greek Campaign.

The Campaign, which lasted for less than three weeks, resulted in 2888 British, Commonwealth and Greek service men losing their lives. In attendance at the service will be Lt Col Nick Gillard of the New Zealand Defence Staff (New Zealand High Commission) and Wing Commander Mark Simpson of the Australian High Commission. Mr Derek Twigg, MP and Mr Liam Byrne are also expected to attend, along with several veterans and families of veterans. The 70th anniversary of the Greek Campaign was also marked in Kalamata, Greece, on 24 May with a service to honour those who gave their lives in mainland Greece in 1941. Those in attendance were treated to a display by the Red Arrows followed by a sunset ceremony on board HMS Sutherland. The Brotherhood of Veterans of the Greek Campaign was founded by the late Edwin Horlington MBE to ensure that the campaign itself and the men left behind were not forgotten. He was awarded the MBE in recognition of his 'service to British ex-Service men and to UK-Greek relations'. For further information contact Frank Gill, President of the Brotherhood: 0151 924 2712. |
