Self-led visits

Our self-led resources are aimed at teachers and group leaders who wish to make the most of any self-led time at the National Memorial Arboretum. We ask that all groups planning a self-led visit to the Arboretum to complete a booking form in advance of your visit.

Landscapes of Life Exhibition - £3 per student or £5.75 with audio guide

Our NEW exhibition is the perfect way to begin your visit to our site and provides students with an insight as to why the Arboretum is here, how it has developed and why it is a special place of Remembrance.

Comprising a mixture of traditional interpretation and interactive exhibits, you will discover a variety of moving and fascinating stories providing the perfect introduction to the Arboretum and its rich collection of memorials and wildlife.  You can:

  • Surround yourself with the changing seasons in our 270 degree film drum as you travel through a year in the Arboretum, meeting a variety of fascinating people as you go.
  • Walk through our digital path of leaves, revealing the poppy field beneath
  • Journey through a timeline of Remembrance from ancient burial mounds through to contemporary social media tributes.
  • See how World War I provided a watershed in how we remember and the importance in the advent of The Royal British Legion in its capacity as custodians of Remembrance.
  • Explore the symbolism in memorial design and learn how some of them came to be part of the National Memorial Arboretum.
  • Design your own memorial landscape using a range of natural features, animals, symbols and trees
  • Share your story in our memory booth or simply let us know what you think about our very special site
  • Explore our latest temporary exhibition

Our easy-to-use, handheld audio guide interprets 90 of our most frequently visited memorials and allows groups to explore our grounds at their own pace.

Self-Led Activity Resources
Our self-led resources are aimed at teachers and group leaders who wish to make the most of any self-led time at the National Memorial Arboretum. They are a helpful starting point for any pre-visit classroom time, and can be used separately or as a complete set.

Teachers and group leaders may also download the Teacher’s Handbook which provides answers to the sheets and provides overview notes of the activities to help further develop learning.

All of our self-led resources are free to download; however, a suggested donation of £1 per download is appreciated.

The resources are designed for children and young people from KS2-4, and are themed for different memorials/topics:

Memorial Design Presentation
Our memorial design presentation will support your own lessons and projects. The presentation includes pictures and information about a variety of memorials at the Arboretum.

We would be delighted to deliver training and/or host an INSET Day for you and your team.

A typical INSET Day would include:

  • An allocated classroom available for the duration of the day
  • An introduction to our site and explanation of the aims and objectives of the day
  • A guide to accompany you to the outside areas with an introduction to the memorials there
  • Time to develop activities, working individually or in teams
  • An opportunity to present ideas to the group and to reflect on the development of the day. A member of staff would be present to answer any questions

Alternatively, we would also be prepared to travel to you to deliver INSET and CPD sessions. The day gives teachers and trainee teachers the opportunity to think about how they might enhance learning outside of the classroom, use memorials and the outdoors. We have worked with school groups of all ages looking at History, Religious Studies, Philosophy and Ethics, Geography, Literacy, Art and Design and PHSE/Citizenship and are flexible to incorporate other subjects.

Refreshments and food are also available at a cost or simply visit our restaurant.

We look forward to welcoming you soon.
