Where our Nation remembers
WHY DONATE? A WIDOW'S STORY
The Arboretum holds so many stories; we are honoured when we are given permission to share these stories to help illustrate the nature of our work and the need for your donations.
Margaret Allen tells her story...
“The Armed Forces Memorial is the place where I can be with Iain.” Seeing Iain off to the Falklands War was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do – neither of us could have known we’d never see each other again.
I’m now part of the Education Team, explaining why the Arboretum is so important to me. It’s good to be able to turn pain and grief into something positive.
Jay Hyrons tells her story...
‘goodbye’ – a word we always avoided. Then, on 30 May 1982, my worst fears were confirmed. Early that morning I was told that my husband, Lance Corporal Gary Bingley had been killed, aged just 24. For the next 29 years, I couldn’t remember anything about the two weeks after that day.
