From striking glass sculptures to simple stone cairns, there are more than 360 memorials at the National Memorial Arboretum, for both military and civilian associations, all with fascinating stories and symbolism waiting to be discovered. The story of the Lancastria is little known but represents the biggest disaster in British maritime history. The Lancastria was attacked and hit by bombs from German aircraft. The ship sank rapidly and, according to the estimate of the Commanding Officer, Captain Rudolf Sharpe, only around 2,500 of those on board were saved.
