SMS time capsule interred for 100 years with help from local young people
12 September 2016With the help of local young people, including pre-school children, our SMS time capsule was buried in Heroes’ Square on Monday 12 September 2016 in the shadow of our new £15.7m Remembrance Centre.
The time capsule contains the thoughts, reflections and personal stories – submitted by SMS - on why we remember the service and sacrifice of members of our Armed Forces from WWI through to the present day. Leading political figures are among the people who have made contributions.
The phone, kindly donated by mobile network Three, was buried – along with its charger - in an airtight time capsule, donated by the Remembrance Centre’s building contractors, Stepnell. An engraved pavior in Heroes’ Square - a beautiful outdoor area that is being created just outside the new Remembrance Centre, will mark its position. The paviour features the inscription “Why do we remember, The Nation’s Thoughts” along with the date the capsule is to be opened – September 2116.
The time capsule is one of many fascinating and unique resources that are being created at the Arboretum’s new visitor centre to help people explore the meaning of Remembrance and to share and record their own memories. The new facilities are set to open in late October.
